A History Of Violence

  • The colours featured in this poster are grey, this colour has connotations of someone/something being cloudy or moody, this is also reflected in the clouds as they appear to be storm clouds. Grey is the colours of mourning as its a shade of black. It also shows formality, as you often get people wearing grey suits. Grey is used as a good background colour, the darker shades of grey replace black and reflects strength. Lighter shades of grey replace white as a background colour. There is a hint of blue on the gun, and blue us meant to be a calming colour, perhaps reflecting the gun's use in the film. The title of the film is outlined with red, suggesting either passion or danger/aggression.
  • The typography on the poster is Simple, some of the letter are larger that others and this makes it more interesting to look at, it is also a subtle way to focus the attention on the main words (History and Violence)
  • The actors names are found at the top of the poster, they are in a plain colour, making them easy to read.
  • The male is in the foreground suggesting he is the main character and the woman in the background, still an important character but less so than the man in front of her.
  • There is some small typography in the top third of the page. The font is small as to attract the readers attention as the have to look closer to read it. It is also perhaps a small hint to the narrative of the film.
  • The messages in this poster are verbal and visual. The visual image that creates the main message is of the gun. The verbal images support the image of the gun and the message of violence.
