Tinie Tempah - Frisky

We saw this music video and noticed it was filmed in an underground cellar type place. We felt this video was inspirational because of the lighting techniques used, with the use of the colour blue which is frequently features in psychological thriller movies, and how bodies are silhouetted. The use of torch light in this video was very interesting too as it created great shadow and contrast between light and dark.

Poster - Codes & Conventions

As shown by the examples, posters feature the film title that is clear to the audience. The title is often bold and in a noticeable colour to further emphasise it. A tagline is normally just below the main title which makes it the second most important piece of text on the poster.

A large image(s) are used as visual signifiers linking to the genre and the narrative of the film. Often these images are of key characters and/or iconic symbols .  For example, in the “Seven” poster, two of the characters’ faces are used. As well as this the seven deadly sins are listed and crossed out; this suggests to the audience that the narrative might focus on the elimination of the seven deadly sins in someway.

As an image is key in a poster, we will have to think carefully about positioning, costuming/ mise-en-scene and lighting in our  poster to convey elements of the narrative and create intrigue.

There is often additional information on the poster such as the release date, the web address, the actors, the director etc. These are things that we will consider using in a poster to further inform and excite the audience. Rating’s and reviews can also be included in posters as a form of persuasion.

Memento genre: crime thriller

The beginning  of the film opens with an image of a man holding a photograph of a dead body. The photograph is a Polaroid and the person holding it is shaking it, as if the picture is developing, however the picture fades and end up back in the camera, this is when the audience realise that the footage they can see is in reverse.
The sounds accompanying these images sounds like non-diegetic stringed instruments. The music is very slow paced creating a saddening feeling.
Close up images are shown of certain objects around the room such as a pair of glasses and a bullet, this helps build the story and the audience understand what is happening. Throughout this scene the codes and conventions of shadows are used effectively as the images created appeal to the audience, as they are interesting to look at, as some images have to be looked at for longer before the audience can see what the image actually is.
Scenes in colour are in reverse order scenes in black and white are in chronological order.
Mise en scene
*The main character is dressed in a nude coloured suit throughout the film and drives a green jaguar sports car, the audience therefore think he is wealthy. This is juxtaposed with what the villain is wearing. The people in the film who are considered to be the 'bad guys' are dressed in dark colours.
*He is vulnerable due to the fact that he has brain damage. He can't create new memories. He explains what his memory loss is like through the use of a character called 'Sammy' who he says has psychological problem in not being able to form new memories rather than physical ones. This is the opposite to Leonard as he has learnt to remember things through conditioning.
*His memory loss means he much write things down to remember. He gets tattoos of the most important pieces of information and takes Polaroid pictures of people he meets and write a fact about them to help him remember.
*Because he cant make new memories this mean he has to act on instinct.
*When there are scenes that a predominantly in the dark blue becomes a prominent colour.
*There is great contrast between light and dark during the black and white scenes.

*He is on a mission to find the second man who raped and killed his wife.
Sound
*The main sound throughout the film is the non-diegetic sound of the voice over. The voice over is Leonard speaking and it explains the story to the audience from his point of view so the audience feel like they are playing his character and they end up in the same state of mind as Leonard.
*There is very little dramatic sound. We occasionally get flashing images of Leonard's wife wrapped in a plastic bag and as these images appear a sharp non-diegetic screeching is heard.
*Towards the end of the film there is non-diegetic sound of stringed instruments once again played very low and sounding solemn.
Weapons
The weapons used were mainly guns, household objects of physical strength.

there are flashbacks within the film when Leonard is holding his wife's belongings. A flashback appears of his wife using the belongings. This makes the audience feel sympathy towards Leonard as we can see that he is deeply upset at the loss of his wife.

The audience also learn throughout the film that Teddy is trying to lead Leonard astray and is trying to plant false memories.

Trailer: theatrical
The first image we are shown in the trailer is of the main character. There is a great contrast between light and dark, half the mans face is in shadow, one of the codes and conventions of the thriller genre.

Sound:
*There is a non-diegetic voice over from Leonard throughout the trailer, this explains the images that the audience can see.
*There is dialogue throughout from different characters.
*There is also the non-diegetic music in the background of a hollow wind sound and high pitched piano notes. This sound is not very noticeable but adds to the sense of mystery and confusion being shown by Leonard.

*The trailer shows the audience that the film involves violence, through the visual aids of guns and people fighting.

*The first image in the trailer is shown in grey scale however the rest of the trailer is shown in colour. This doesn't give away to the audience the fact that there are two parts to the story.

*Leonard appears to know the man he meets at the beginning of the trailer, the man appears friendly towards him so the audience assume they are friends, until we see the clip of him being killed at the end of the trailer.

*The audience is introduced to all the characters in the trailer.

*The voice over tells the plot of the film

Editing:
*The editing is fairly slow paced at the beginning but towards the middle it starts to speed up.
*The editing in the middle also involves some slow motion shots
*At the end of the trailer the editing has got faster again, but the voice over is still at the same speed

*The title of the film is shown at the end of the trailer

 Font:
*The font is simple.
*The blue colour of the font means it does not stand out too much from the black, meaning you have to look at it harder to be clear what it says
*The letters are spaced wide apart creating distance
*The font has sharp edges making it appear harsh.
